“Automatic” was something to brag about at a certain point in time:

Is “entropy” automatic?

That would have shown them you've really made it: an automatic diesel Mercedes. You wouldn't be getting from person to person to impress them very quickly, but you'd look good doing it.

Thankfully those are FI gas models, so they can move along OK. But the badges exist on diesels, too, and these would be tough in some modern traffic situations :
I think MB discontinued this badge in the early 70s, and it wasn’t consistently used.
When I was a kid, there was a Peugeot 604 in the neighborhood (gotta love the PNW), the auto versions were badged in French even for the USDM - this was tres exotique to me at a young age:

Back in the day, these were a common sight on the boot lid of the later H series of Holden sedans and wagons. Naturally enough, this particular automatic transmission became known (rightly or wrongly) as the Traumatic.

Hahaha I suppose they were just asking for that. 3 gears in a low powered slus hbox car could very well have been.

Quite a few had that yeah, that 5th gear was quite a thing once. I recall these on early Tempo as well:
